October might not spring to mind when planning a US beach trip, but it’s actually one of the best times to visit the coast. Summer crowds have thinned out, and across the Gulf and Southeast, hurricane season has mostly passed. The water hasn’t caught up to the cooler air yet either, so plenty of these beaches are still swimmable well past Labor Day.

If you’re looking for a fall break with sand, sea, and no summer crowds, you’re in the right place. Here are eleven of the best US beaches to visit in October, and what makes each one a top pick at this time of year.

1. Waikiki Beach

  • Location: Oahu, Hawaii
  • Best for: Warm water and easy access to restaurants and shops
  • Note: Hawaii’s ocean temperature barely shifts by season, so October swimming feels almost identical to July.

October in Waikiki falls after the peak summer travel season and before the winter whale-watching rush that picks up in December. The beach and the water both feel calmer as a result, and the ocean conditions are similar to summer, giving visitors the best of both worlds.

Waikiki is only one of many beaches worth exploring on Oahu. The island’s other best beaches are easy add-ons if you have a few extra days.

2. Ka’anapali Beach

  • Location: Maui, Hawaii
  • Best for: Sunset views and calm swimming conditions
  • Note: October sits between summer’s peak pricing and the winter holiday rush, so the beach tends to feel less packed.

Ka’anapali’s calm, clear water and long stretch of sand make it one of Maui’s easiest beaches for swimming. The calm, clear ocean is also popular for snorkeling at this time of year.

October’s smaller crowds make it easier to find a quiet patch of sand than it is on popular beaches like Ka’anapali at the height of summer. Whale season hasn’t started yet either, so the water stays quiet without the winter boat traffic that builds up by January.

3. Coronado Beach

  • Location: San Diego, California
  • Best for: Wide sand close to downtown San Diego
  • Note: San Diego’s dry season stretches well into fall, and October is a great time to get involved with local events.

Coronado’s sand is wide enough to spread out even on a busy weekend, and the water stays calm most of the year. October trades summer’s marine layer mornings for clearer skies without the crowds that fill the beach in July and August.

Fall in Coronado also offers the annual A Taste of Coronado, a popular self-guided food event, and Halloween is the perfect time to take a ghost tour at the historic Hotel del Coronado.

If you have time to explore beyond Coronado, San Diego’s other beaches are all within a short drive.

4. Main Beach, Laguna Beach

  • Location: Laguna Beach, California
  • Best for: Tide pools and a walkable village
  • Note: Ocean temperatures along this stretch of coast often peak in late summer and early fall, so October water can run warmer than June.

Southern California is a top pick for October beach trips, thanks to the almost-guaranteed sunny weather and comfortable water temperatures.

Laguna’s Main Beach sits right against the village, which can get extremely busy during summer. It’s much easier to get a table at popular cafes and restaurants without a long wait during fall, giving visitors a more relaxed vacation experience.

For a longer California beach trip, the full coastal lineup covers stops from north to south.

5. Siesta Beach

  • Location: Siesta Key, Florida
  • Best for: Powder-soft quartz sand
  • Note: Hurricane season is winding down by late October, and the crowds haven’t yet arrived for winter snowbird season.

Siesta Key is at its best in October. Humidity has dropped, the height of hurricane season has typically passed, and the Gulf water is still warm enough for swimming. It’s also one of the quieter windows before snowbird season fills up the area’s hotels and rentals, making it ideal for visitors who prefer a quiet beach experience.

For a great place to stay, we recommend Siesta Key Dreams, especially if you’re looking for a beach house that can host a large group.

Siesta Key is just one stop on Florida’s long coastline, and many of the state’s other beaches are equally enjoyable in October.

6. Smathers Beach

  • Location: Key West, Florida
  • Best for: Watersports and festival fun
  • Note: Gulf waters stay warm enough to swim, and Fantasy Fest is one of the island’s main annual draws.

Smathers Beach is Key West’s largest stretch of sand, offering calm, warm water that’s ideal for fall swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Fantasy Fest, an extremely popular ten-day festival, takes place in October and features parades and themed events that celebrate Key West. Hotels book up in advance during this time, so be sure to book ahead. October is also the start of the commercial stone crab season, making it a popular time for seafood lovers to visit. These beachside vacation rentals are right nearby Smathers Beach, making it the obvious choice for those looking for a Key West getaway.

Key West is one stop among several spectacular Keys not to be missed. Read our full Florida Keys beaches guide, which covers the best of the rest of the island chain.

7. Gulf Shores Public Beach

  • Location: Gulf Shores, Alabama
  • Best for: Wide white sand and calm Gulf water
  • Note: Gulf Shores is an ideal base for nearby hiking, biking, and other spectacular beaches.

Gulf Shores has some of the whitest sand on the Gulf Coast, and the water stays warm and calm enough for families to enjoy most of the year. October also brings noticeably thinner crowds than the summer season, so it’s a great choice for a peaceful beach trip.

For the best Gulf Shores experience, we recommend booking a beach house. Having your own home right on the sand is the perfect way to enjoy the Gulf Coast lifestyle here.

Alabama’s coastline has several other beaches within a short drive of Gulf Shores, and it’s a solid base for a coastal adventure. October’s weather is also ideal for hiking and biking in Gulf State Park, making Gulf Shores a top choice for active vacationers.

8. South Padre Island Beach

  • Location: South Padre Island, Texas
  • Best for: Fishing and warm Gulf water
  • Note: October is prime fall fishing season here, making it popular with fishing fans.

South Padre’s warm, shallow Gulf water makes it an easy beach for swimming well into fall. Anglers also consider October one of the better months for redfish and trout along this stretch of the Texas coast.

For more of the Texas coastline, the state’s other beaches stretch from the Gulf up toward Galveston and are well worth visiting.

9. Coligny Beach

  • Location: Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
  • Best for: Wide, flat sand for biking and walking
  • Note: Humidity drops noticeably by October, while the water is still warm from summer.

Coligny’s flat, wide sand makes it easy to walk or bike for long stretches, and the nearby beach park has enough shops, restaurants, and amenities for an easy full day out.

October’s lighter humidity makes the island feel more comfortable than it does in August, making it a strong choice for visitors who prefer to avoid the intense heat that southern summers are infamous for.

Hilton Head is one of several good options on this coast, and South Carolina’s other beaches are worth a look for a longer trip.

10. East Beach, St. Simons Island

  • Location: St. Simons Island, Georgia
  • Best for: A quieter, less commercial barrier island beach
  • Note: Georgia’s coast follows the same pattern as the rest of the Southeast, with lower humidity and warm water through October.

East Beach has a slower pace than the more commercialized beach towns nearby, with a long lighthouse-lined shoreline and fewer crowds most of the year. October brings noticeably fewer visitors still, and some days it feels like you have the entire stretch of sand to yourself.

Lighthouse Vacations hosts a number of great rentals right around East Beach, giving you the best chance to enjoy this coastline without needing to drive.

Slightly cooler temperatures are also well-suited to walking, bird watching, and the many other outdoor pursuits that this barrier island is known for. St. Simons is a good introduction to the coast; Georgia’s other beaches are worth exploring if you have more time.

11. Nags Head Beach

  • Location: Outer Banks, North Carolina
  • Best for: Wide beaches and fall fishing
  • Note: The Gulf Stream keeps the water relatively mild into fall, and crowds thin out significantly after Labor Day.

Nags Head’s beaches stay wide and uncrowded through October, with mild water and good surf fishing as fall migrations pass through. It’s also one of the better months to see the Outer Banks without the summer traffic that backs up Highway 12.

The Outer Banks is a great place to stay but we’re partial to Nags Head Beach for the month of October. For plenty of accommodation choices in the area, we recommend First Flight Rentals.

North Carolina has many other beautiful beaches that run the length of the state’s coastline and are definitely worth visiting.
